Timnath is a town in Northern Colorado located in Larimer County, founded in 1882. The city is located southeast of Fort Collins and is approximately one-half mile east of the interstate 25 interchange. Essentially, Timnath is a small agricultural community primarily used to farm sugar beets, potatoes, alfalfa, and cattle. The town has remained unchanged until recently due to the growth of neighbouring cities like Windsor. It is one of the fastest-growing communities, with a population that skyrocketed from 625 in the 2010 census to 3 992 in 2018. The town is named after a biblical city and was incorporated on July 6, 1920. It is a home rule town governed by Mayor Mark Soukup. The city has an elevation of 4,867 feet and covers a total area of 6.59 square miles. It lies in UTC-7(MST) time zone, which changes to UTC-6(MDT) in summer.

Government

The town implements home rule and is governed by a town council that consists of five elected officials that serve a four-year term. The mayor heads the town council, and council meetings are open. The commission holds regular meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The town is closely knit, with the board appointing a town manager tasked to preside over the city’s administration. Timnath is a secure town with police services provided by the Timnath Police department and Larimer County, the sheriff’s department. Poudre Fire Authority provides fire protection services.

Geography

Timnath has annexed several square miles of land to the east and south since the 2000 census. The town has experienced significant economic development mainly due to its agricultural prowess. Geographically the land is low density and has several landmarks, including Harmony Road, Poudre River, and Timnath Reservoir. The town is located at 40 degrees north and 104degrees south. Timnath Presbyterian Church is another landmark that indicates the existence of religion in the city. The 1900 school building displays the town’s value of education. It is a secondary building to Timnath Elementary School.

History

The area was first settled by white settlers in 1869, who constructed the first schoolhouse, which they named Fairview. The school served as a meeting ground for the Presbyterian Church. Later on, a church would be constructed, and a congregation amassed. As the town grew, a post office was established in 1884, headed by Reverend Charles A. Taylor. A larger school was built, and the district was consolidated with Fort Collins. Timnath experienced the brash of World War 2 when Japan launched Fu-Go balloon bombs. One of the balloons exploded in a field in Timnath, causing the town to be a historic site.
